Why You Shouldn't Rush Decorating Your Home

As an Interior Designer, I'm often working with clients who have just moved into a new home. And usually the new home is larger than their last one. Which means only one thing - they need more pieces to fill their space.

Moving is a lot of work. It never feels good to have your stuff in boxes and be unorganized. When you move, you want to get settled as soon as possible and feel comfortable. I know, I just recently went through it myself with my new house. But sometimes the anxiousness of wanting to be "settled" can cloud people's judgement when it comes to investing in the right pieces for their home.

A common mistake I see happen is people end up buying for the sake of buying. They buy because they think the "have to" fill the space now. This simply isn't true. Do you need your essentials? Yes. But the rest can wait.

So give yourself a break! You have just bought an expensive house with a lot of rooms to fill. It is going to cost a lot of money to fill all those rooms. And it should, you invested in a nice house, so invest in what you fill it with too. But here is the good news, you don't have to do it all at one time!

When you start buying for the sake of buying, cause you think you need that sideboard this very minute, you end up compromising quality, style and what you truly love.

Please, slow down.

I always tell my clients this, we are going for love, not like. If you don't love a piece, please do not buy it. Save up for a few months and get what you truly love. It is a waste of money to buy something that isn't what you really want, cause sooner than later, you will tire of it since you never loved it to begin with. Not to mention the quality may not hold up.

Who says your house has to be perfectly filled and decorated right away? As you can see from my photos here, I'm still very much settling into my home. It's okay! Homes should be curated over time. Homes are a reflection of us and our lives. They should tell our story. And regardless of money, that shouldn't be bought all at once.

Bottom line: Don't let your anxiousness to be "settled" lead you to purchasing something you kinda of like but don't love. Remember we are only going for love here!
